Dora Brücke-Teleky was one of the first women studying medicine in Vienna. She graduated in 1904 and then specialized, receiving clinical training in gynecology and urology. Brücke-Teleky was the first female member of the College of Physicians in Vienna.
In 1938, she emigrated to the US after the “Anschluss” and continued to practice medicine in Massachusetts until the 1950ies.
The Award
The College of Physicians in Vienna and the Alumni Club of the Medical University of Vienna jointly launch a biannual academic award for Postdocs who published exceptional papers (as first author) in the previous 12 months. The purpose of this award is to recognize merit and achievements of talented Postdocs and to increase visibility of their work. The Dora Brücke-Teleky Award intends to promote the academic career of young scientists, strategically addressing the promotion of young scientists at the Postdoc stage.
The Dora Brücke-Teleky Award will be given twice a year. The three best candidates of each term will be invited to present their work at a dedicated event held at the Medical University of Vienna or (alternating) the Billrothhaus. The award itself consists of a certificate and prize money (1st 1.365,00 euros, 2nd 682,50 euros 3rd 341,25 euros) which is equally sponsored by the College of Physicians in Vienna and the Alumni Club.
Awardees and their work will be featured on the respective websites and via social media.
The Procedure
Candidates must apply for the Dora Brücke-Teleky Award and have been performing their research leading to the publication at the Medical University of Vienna. The proposal should consist of 1) a cover letter by the applicant, 2) the paper submitted for the award and 3) a CV of the applicant.
Eligible candidates are Postgraduates of any discipline (i.e. PhD degree in Medicine, Biology, Physics, etc.) working at the Medical University of Vienna. The submitted work must have been performed at the Medical University of Vienna and must have been published within 12 months preceding the application deadline*, with the applicant being the first author. In instances where more authors share the first authorship, those authors must agree on the “lead” first author (who then can apply). If the other shared first author is from an institution other than the Medical University of Vienna, the first author from the Medical University of Vienna is eligible to apply.
What is being evaluated
The committee considers the quality of the submitted publication, as well as the performance of the candidates over the Postdoc period. Emphasis will be given on the depth of the insights gained and the originality of the contributions.
